General Notes for James William Clark
I always knew, from what my Mother had told me, that my grandfather, J. Will Clark, AKA James William Clark, was buried at Memorial Cemetery in Oklahoma City. My grandmother, Exa Clark, had told me my grandfather was a Mason. She was in the Eastern Star in Kansas City, MO. My Mother told me that my brother, Thomas Victory Clark, was buried either in the same grave as my grandfather or alongside it. I made a search of Memorial Cemetery and could find no record of my brother who died as an infant. But, there was only one James William Clark buried in Memorial Cemetery.
It appears, based on the evidence, that my grandfather was married to two women, one in Kansas City, the other one living in Oklahoma City on 9th Street, the place my grandfather died. My Mother and I lived for many years on 9th Street, and many times my Mother mentioned that was where the Clark Family lived. She probably visited the family at that location.
Grandmother Exa Clark said she had taken a honeymoon in Muskogee, OK, which was still Indian Territory, and the next morning after arrival, J. Will Clark had dropped the gun from the shoulder holster accidentally, which discharged and shot him in the heart. In those days they apparently had no hospitals, and J. Will Clark had to stay in the hotel room for 6 months, until he recovered, while grandmother, Exa, had to get a job in the hotel as a maid to support him. Grandmother, Exa, told me, as did my Father, Tom Clark, that he got weaker and weaker over about a year period, lived in the apartment, and finally died there in 1938. Grandmother said relatives showed up, which she had to cook for and make sleeping mats around the apartment for them to sleep on. When J. Will died, she said they made a grab for everything, even ripped off his pistol and wallet. She said she threw them out and never had any contact with them again. At the time in the 1960's, when I was in contact with her, I should have asked who the relatives were as I have been unable to learn anything about any of them. My Father never mentioned any relatives, and I never asked as I should have. I could also have asked my Uncle Paul Clark but never did.
