General Notes for Jacob Henry Lay
Farmer, emigrated to America 1846
In 1861 after clearing land and building his log cabin, Jacob had a good wheat crop. Due to poor local prices for wheat he borrowed a wagon and ox and took the wheat 150 miles to Chicago and sold it for $1/bushel; the trip took 17 days. He bought a horse and supplies and returned home with the borrowed ox and wagon. He loaded the wagon with wheat again pulling the wagon with ox and the new horse and returned to Chicago for a good price. That trip took 14 day and he returned home. He made a third trip and was able to buy another horse and new wagon. He became a successful farmer in Wayne, WI.
