General Notes for Theodore Jesse Hoover
Theodore and his siblings were separated and taken into the homes of relatives, "adrift on the wreck of their little world", wrote Theodore. He went to work on the farm of his uncle Davis and Aunt Maria Hoover and at age 16, left and went into the world to try and make a way to get his brother and sister together again. He went to OR because his grandmother Minthorn and his sister were there and he became a typesetter and one of the first Linotype operators on the Pacific Coast. In 1897 after his brother Herbert had graduated from Stanford University, Theodore entered the University. He married Mildred Crew Brooke, graduated from Stanford in 1901 and started his career as mining engineer. He became eminent in this field, a world traveler and author of technical publications and dean of the Stanford University School of Engineering. Like his ancestors, he bought extensive land along a stream, the Wendell in Santa Cruz Co., CA where his children grew up and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren have their roots in the land of Rancho Del Oso. Theodore and Mildred Hoover are buried there on Grateful Mountain, overlooking the Waddell Valley and the Pacific.
