General Notes for William Albin Cook
He had a long white beard, when he would go to town, children would climb on his lap, thinking he was Santa.
After the death of his wife,Mary, he had Charles Greer and his family move into his home with him. The wife of Charles, Hazel, would cook the family meals and serve him his meals. Charles & Hazel Greer were my paternal grandparents. Billy Cook was my materal great grandfather. My father, Melvin, was a small lad and he always told the story that Mr. Cook would call him 'Cappie'. Mr. Cook would take his horse and buggy and go to the big city (Urbana), he would ask my father, "Well Cappie I'm off to the big city, what do you want me to bring you, a watermelon or weinies"? My father told that story over and over up until his dying day.
When any of the Cook family would go to Urbana, they would travel via Old Troy Pike. At that time it was not yet paved and was always muddy. When I was growing up the family still called it, "Mud Road".
His residence was located on Valley Pike, about 1/2 way between Old Troy Pike and State Route 55, on the west side of the road. The house disappeared from the landscape about 1955 or so. I personally don't remember living in it, but it was still standing and I remember walking through the ruins, before it fell completely down.
The land he resided on and the farm next door where my grandparents, Rudolph and Tressie lived, was once the property of Billy's in-laws, Peter Smith and wife.
