General Notes for George Mackie Pelletreau
George Mackie Pelletreau, son of William S. and Nancy Mackie Pelletreau was born in Southampton Long Island, N.Y., October 12, 1812. When a young man he was one of the crew of the whale ship Atlas, commanded by Capt. Austin Herrick who was a near neighbor. A whale was sighted, and boats lowered, and the whale when harpooned dived immediately to a great depth, when it came to the surface it shot out of the water almost its entire length and fell across the boat directly where George was sitting, and young Pelletreau was never seen afterwards. The enormous weight stove and upset the boat, and the rest of the crew were picked up by the other boats. It was the unwritten law of the sea that on such occasions search must be continued until all hands agreed that further search was useless, and it was done in this case. This sad event occured on December 21, 1832, and in South Latitude 37 degrees 27 minutes, and 3 degrees West Longitude. He was a young man of excellent character and greatly beloved by his ship mates.
