General Notes for Daniel Dillon

THE DILLON FAMILY

The Dillon family was an Irish Quaker family. Luke Dillon married in Ireland and came to America. Several of Luke Dillon's grandchildren married Haworth's, so these two lines are quite enmeshed for several generations.

One of his grand daughters, Ann Dillon, married Richard Haworth in 1765 in Frederick County, VA.

Another granddaughter, Susannah Dillon, married George Haworth.

I will begin the history with the earliest Dillon I have information on.

LUKE DILLON

Luke Dillon was born about 1687 in Armagh County of Northern Ireland. He was a Quaker by faith.

About 1710, he eloped and married Susannah Garrett. Susannah was born in Armagh and came from a wealthy family. Luke's family was quite poor. They eloped and immigrated to America.

They went to the Quaker Colony on Nantucket Island off the Massachusetts coast. They probably arrived in the Port of Boston and then sailed to Nantucket.

Luke and Susannah remained on Nantucket until about 1714 when they moved to Bucks County, PA. Their first two children were born on Nantucket and their last two were born in Bucks County.

A descendant, Alfred Dillon, tells the story that Luke was a drunk. In the winter of 1717, he spent an evening at the local tavern, got drunk and rode home in a driving snowstorm. On the way he fell from his horse and rolled into a ditch. His body was not discovered until a thaw later in the winter. His last child was born after his death and was named for him.

Susannah remarried about a year later to Peter Dillon, in Buck's County, PA. No one is sure how Luke and Peter were related. They later moved into Virginia and then into NC.

The following is what I know about Luke’s children and grandchildren.

Hannah Dillon

Hannah was born about 1711 or 1712 on Nantucket. She died as an infant.

Daniel Dillon

Daniel was born September 4, 1713 on Nantucket. He died in Guilford County, NC. on November 22, 1805. He married Lydia B. Hodgson about 1743 or 1744, probably in Frederick County, Virginia. Lydia was born in about 1724 and died May 29, 1800 in Guilford County, NC.

Most of the Quakers began leaving Pennsylvania in the 1740s and traveled south, first to Frederick County, Maryland (later part of Virginia) and then into central NC by the 1750s. The following is what I know about their children.

MARTHA DILLON was born November 3, 1745 in Hopewell, Frederick County, VA.

She married Robert Blakely, born August 24, 1743 and died May 14, 1828. Both moved from NC to Washington County, Tennessee where they lived and died near Leesburg.

NATHAN DILLON was born July 6, 1748. He was married on August 31, 1776 to Hannah Bowman. He died November 26, 1819.

WILLIAM DILLON was born May 9, 1750. He was married on May 27, 1775 to Rachel (last name not known).

PETER DILLON was born February 6, 1752 in Hopewell VA. He married Elizabeth Haworth in New Garden on August 11, 1773. Elizabeth was a daughter of James Haworth and Sarah Wood. Sarah was born March 24, 1754 and died October 2, 1832 in Greene County, TN. Peter died in Greene County on July 9, 1829. Their children were:

Sarah, Garrett, James, William, Lydia, Phebe, Jemima, Elizabeth and Peter Dillon.

JESSE DILLON was born February 6, 1753. He married Hannah Ruckman on January 20, 1778 in Guilford County. Hannah was a daughter of Joseph and Sarah Ruckman. Jesse died in Dover, Clinton County, Ohio on October 3, 1823. Their children were: Achsah, Jonathan, Susannah, Sarah, Martha, Luke, Hannah and Abigail Dillon.

DANIEL DILLON JR. was born on March 20, 1757 and died in July, 1836. He married Ann Peugh on February 28, 1778. Their children were: Jesse, Nathan, Lydia, Thomas, Ann, William, Walter, Absolom, Jane, Joseph, John and Daniel Dillon.

HANNAH DILLON was born on May 14, 1759 in New Garden, Guilford County, NC. I have no other information.

PATIENCE DILLON was born October 31, 1762. She married Thomas Hodgson on November 5, 1774. Thomas, born February 21,1756 in NC, was a son of John Hodgson. Thomas died in Guilford County on August 16, 1795 and Patience died in Belmont County, OH on December 30, 1830. Their children were: Rebecca, Amos, Daniel, Susannah, Joel, Rachel, Lydia and Mary Hodgson.

ISAAC DILLON was born May 23, 1766 and was married on January 26, 1788. I do not have the wife's name.

There was also a child that was born on October 19, 1761 and died a week later on October 8, 1761.

William Dillon

William Dillon was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1715. He married Mary Reese (Rees) in the early 1740s, probably in Frederick County, Virginia. William died in Frederick County, Virginia on November 10, 1762. Mary remarried to Joseph Bridges, probably in Guilford County. Most of the family moved to the New Garden Meeting in Rowan County, North Carolina in the late 1760s and early 1770s.

The following is what I know about his children.

CHARITY DILLON was born about 1745. She married William Reese on April 4, 1761 in Frederick County, Virginia.

ANN DILLON was born May 1, 1746 (new style) or 7-10-1746 old style. She married Richard Haworth on May 10, 1765 in Frederick County, Virginia. They moved to NC and then to TN. This is our line of Haworths and their lives are told in the preceding HAWORTH FAMILY HISTORY.

SUSANNAH DILLON was born in 1755. She was married to George Haworth on November 1, 1773 in Rowan County, NC. George was another son of James Haworth and Sarah Wood and was a brother of Richard, above, who married Ann Dillon.

HANNAH DILLON was born May 15, 1760. She married Edward Wright on August 7, 1780. She died October 17, 1855 at age ninety-five.

JOHN DILLON married Lydia Geist in 1774.

JAMES DILLON married Sarah Monks in 1774.

MARY DILLON married Jacob Pickering on June 1, 1778.

Luke Dillon II

Luke, junior was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1717 after his father had died. He was killed as a young man in a fight over a gun. He never married.
